Who can contact the IGD?

Any person can bring a matter to the attention of the Inspector-General, including those working for the NZDF. The matter must be relevant to the performance of the Inspector-General’s functions. If you are uncertain if a matter should be raised with the Inspector-General, contact the IGD to discuss further.

How to bring a matter to the Inspector-General’s attention

You can bring a matter to the attention of the Inspector-General in writing by post, email, phone, or in person. If you contact the IGD by phone or in person you will need to put the matter in writing as soon as you can. The office will work with you as necessary to understand and record the matter. You can have a representative bring a matter to the IGD’s attention on your behalf, such as a lawyer.

Anonymity and confidentiality

The Inspector-General can provide whistleblowers or those bringing matters to the Inspector-General’s attention with anonymity or confidentiality, in some circumstances (s 38 IGD Act). If you are considering bringing a matter to the Inspector-General’s attention, and wish to remain anonymous, you should contact the Inspector-General to discuss these issues.

Classified or sensitive information

The IGD has facilities for handling information classified at all levels. If you are considering making a disclosure or bringing a matter to the Inspector-General’s attention which involves classified or sensitive information, contact the IGD for information and guidance about how to communicate securely, privately and without breaching security procedures.
