The IGD provides dedicated independent oversight of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF). The IGD investigates and assesses the NZDF to support the Minister in their responsibility to the House of Representatives for the activities of the NZDF, and to assure the public that the activities of the NZDF are subject to independent scrutiny and comply with New Zealand’s obligations under international law.
The office was established by the Inspector-General of Defence Act 2023, which came into force on 26 January 2025.
